15 April 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 15th [April 1910]. A letter from Blanche received today tells me that the sale of Monty’s things at Christie’s had so far brought in £14000 so we may hope that things will go on in the same way & that the money owing to Theo Guest may be forth coming in the end. Mr Montalba came in the morng and we did over Hospital accounts together. Mrs Hills came from the Hospital to lunch with me & also Sra Pezzè Pascolato & they had some very interesting talk together. Sa Pezzè being an inspectress of Venice schools & Mrs Hills head teacher in a County Council London School. They decided that the Italian govt is far more liberal than the Eng. & the children fed, clothed & taught here & the mistress better paid & pensioned. After lunch I took Mrs Hills out in gondola & paid Angela a short visit then went to the sailor’s Institute & interviewed one of the partners to whom we have let the room as a wine shop. He wanted to persuade me to let him remain on another fortnight. I finally told him he must deliver up the keys tomorrow. Came home to tea & sent on Mrs Hills to the Hosp. in gondola. Took leave of her as she returns tomorrow to London. The Dss Dowr of Roxburghe & Mr Ed Greaves came to tea with me & promised to come to dine tomorrow. When they left I walked out & called on the Malagolas at the Archives & took the pair out for a walk, getting home at 7.30. The weather is much milder this evening. At 10 Lady Vivian & her youngest girl arrived from Rome to stay with me– Had tea & to bed.
