1 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 1st May [1910]. We all 3 went to morning service & afterwards for a turn on the Piazza. After lunch I went to see Mrs Whitaker who is not very well & then at 4 went with the Vivians to Css Papadopoli garden at Tolentini where were collected most of the society & where skating on rollers was going on. The D of the Abruzzi was there & flying round on the asphalt with his arm round the young ladies’ waists as he went skating round with them one by one. Alexandra Vivian not having her own skates with her did not skate much tho’ people offered to lend her their skates. It was a pretty scene the garden with its fresh spring green trees & lawn & the groups of people gayly dressed sitting about. The garden is a large one to be in a town & from it one sees no buildings—as it is well planted. I made the acquaintance of the Duke’s A.D.C. the Marchese Durazzi & told him I should like to invite H.R.H. to my house some day. He said he was sure he would like to come later on– Countess Papadopoli very kindly poured tea for every one & was very cordial & hospitable. Abt 6 we took our leave & went for a row in gondola by Canareggio & so home by the Abrazia. Dined at 8 & went after to Piazza where the band was playing. Today being the workmans holiday the Piazza was very full & animated.
