8 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 8th [May 1910]. I was well & up again. Went to morning service. The church was full & nearly every one in mourning. I met the Consul at the door & gave him a seat in my pew. Mr Price preached a short & good sermon saying the King had given us a good example in 3 things in “duty patriotism & . After the service the organ played softly a few bars of God save the King & then broke into the Dead March in Saul, every one standing. It was very touching. I went to see Angela after church. A tremendous wind got up in the afternoon & there was no going out in gondola. I walked to the Frari to see the Malagola & arranged to fetch her on Tuesday at 9 & take her over to the hospital for a course of massage every day & then Malagola & I walked to the Piazza & took the steamer to the Giudecca for me to go to the Hospital to speak to Miss Chaffey. We returned by the ferry to the Zattere. On arriving home I found a telegram saying “I am deeply touched by your thoughtful message of sympathy & thank you for your kind telegram. Alexandra–” Only think of the poor woman having the courage to write a telegram at such a moment! The papers say she is wonderful & does not give way—poor thing. I fear she will suffer for it later. Mr Whitaker came just before dinner to get advice as to his household arrangements. Luigino Franchetti came to bid me good bye as he returns to Eton tomorrow. He played a few last airs to us. We dined at 7.15 as I was going to the Sailor’s Institute. Luigino sat down with us & had dinner tho’ he was going to dine at Sra Vianelli’s opposite here! Baker & I walked to the Institute for the eveng service & Mr Price made an address on the King’s death. He walked part of the way home with me.
