10 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 10th [May 1910]. We all breakfasted together at ¼ to 9 & then I went off in gondola to the Archivio di Stato to fetch Sra Malagola & took her to the Cos: Hospital that she might spend the day there & undergo a cure of massage. There are a great many patients in & it was a busy hour. I paid a visit to that queer Mr Rolfe who is nearly well and will be leaving soon. He talked very strangely & it was difficult to understand his drift. He spoke of his mother & sister & said he would go to see them as soon as he could. He thanked me for hospitality at the hospital. I returned home by 11 & to my usual work. Miss Chaffey tells me that Rolfe now says that he regrets that he has written a libellous novel on English society here & having sent it to America to be published—but in return for the kindness he has received at the Hospital he will now publish a sequel contradicting the first book. The man is mad—& he looked it as he lay there talking to me. He told me that his mother depends on him for her livelihood, while I know that he is deeply in debt for his own living at our hotel here. At 4 o’cl I went over to the Hospital with Pss Thurn & Taxis & Sigr Malagola to fetch his wife home. On the return the Pss & I got out on the Zattere & walked to the Piazza & back to S. Angelo pontone & were fetched across the Canal by my gondola. It was then just 7 & I had had a long day & was tired.
