11 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 11th [May 1910]. Ola took Concetta Malagola over to the Hospital at 9 this morning & I fetched her back at 5 p.m. I worked at hospital accounts with Mr Montalba all the morning. Mr & Mrs Hugh Poynter arrived from Constantinople to stay with me by the Fiume steamer at 7 a.m. He is the son of Sir Edward (P.A.) & secy to Sir Adam Black at Constantinople. There he married an American girl who is very pleasant & intelligent. They are on their way to England for a holiday. It was very wet all the morning & so bitterly cold that we lighted a fire in the drawing room. Sr Malagola & Mr Alick Yorke, who is staying with the Whitakers, came to lunch. He is very depressed at the death of the King that he has been a Court official for the last 40 years. Mr Geoffrey Howard (son of Ld Carlisle & sec to Mr Asquith) brought a Mr Moyers (US) to see my pictures after lunch. Mr Howard asked me if I had further news of the petition against Freddy Guest’s return to Parliament & seemed to think the case against him was feeble. I remarked that most of our family did not wish him success. Went out to see Angela Reinelt & then on to fetch home Concetta. Paid the Edens a visit in their house & walked on to see Mrs Curtis & so home. The Hillman’s came to bid me good bye as they leave tomorrow for England. I gave them several letters of introduction to my friends. The temperature today down to 11º from 17º 2 days ago.
