13 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 13th [May 1910]. Princess up—Ola down– Most lovely day—tho’ cold very bright. The common belief is in the influence of Halley’s comet. The uneducated are very uneasy as to it in many ways. Mrs Osborne (neé Hammersley) & her son who is an attaché at the Embassy at Rome came to luncheon as also Sr Malagola as his wife spends her days at our hospital doing the rest cure. Css Papadopoli came at 3 to invite me to dine with them. I refused on acct of the Court mourning but she pressed me to go & said it was not a party so I accepted for next Monday. Went a moment to see Mrs Whitaker who is not well & then returned & took my whole party over to tea at the Eden’s garden & showed the Poynters over the Hospital. In the evening Malagola fetched the girls & they went out in gondola to hear the singing on the water. There are boats’ full of singers every evening opposite the Piazzetta—rough voices—& indifferent music but they attract the travellers. In former days those boats used to serenade the hotels & come down the grand canal—but now that the steamers run so continuously that has been stopped by the police as dangerous to life. The Poynters took leave of me to night as they leave for London by 8 a.m. train tomorrow.
