15 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 15th [May 1910]. Up early & went with Ola & the girls to the 8 o’clock service. Back by 9 to breakfast. Being Whit Sunday there were a large number of communicants. Went back to 10.30 service & afterwards to the Piazza– The girls went into S. Marks to see the centre cross lamp lighted. I went to the H. Victoria to see Angela whom I found better. She was in low spirits over society here—being constantly tormented by friends for money– She found the one gentleman who had begged her for money to help in a family difficulty had been to the jewellers to buy a large silver vase– She sent 3000 marks to Austria for a charity & only 2000 reached their destination. I walked home by lunch time. Mr Williamson (the ex priest) came to lunch. He is very upset at a horrid book published by Dr Robertson against the Roman Catholic Church in Italy & had sent it to me to see. I condoled with him being also horrified– Dr R. is a fanatical Scotch Minister—but living here among Roman Catholics he need not insult their religious beliefs. After lunch I went to call on Lady Helen Vincent & saw Miss Muriel Wilson staying with her. Pss Tour & T. went by steamer to the Lido. I took Betty & Elizabeth to the Hospital & we brought home the Malagola couple. I & Baker went off at ¼ to 8 on foot to the Sailor’s Institute to attend the service. Mr Price discoursed on the death of our King & begged the men to attend the service in the church here on Friday next & to sign the address of condolence to the new King George V. They begged it might be sent round the ships for their signature. I dined at 9 on my return home.
