22 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 22nd [May 1910]. This morning’s paper tells of a horrid crime committed here last night. Cavaliere Stucky the rich owner of the big flour mill on the Giudecca was assassinated by a dismissed workman. Stucky was entering the station to take the evening train to his country house when the workman jumped upon him & cut his throat with a razor. In 5 minutes he was dead to the horror of his son who was with him. Yesterday the great Russian trial of the Jarnowska was concluded. The assassin Naumow got 3 years imprisonment. Prilukoff 10 years & Jarnowska 8. As they have already been 3 years in prison before they were judged the murderer was virtually absolved. This probably invited the workman to do his foul deed. Went to morning church with Ola, Helen Johnson & Elizabeth Boyle– The funeral hangings were not yet removed. Went afterwards to the Piazza & on to see Angela Reinelt & home to luncheon– Alick Yorke lunched & sat talking some time afterwards. Wrote letters. After tea took the 2 girls & Helen J. over to the Eden’s garden & left them there as they wanted to see the comet at sunset. I came back at once & dined with Ola at 7 & then walked with Baker to the Sailor’s Institute. There were no men there & consequently no service. Ola went off to Rome to see the Anglo American Home of wh she is to be matron this autumn. The gondola fetched me home & I sent Mr Price on in it. The girls & Helen J. returned at 10 having seen no comet as it was too cloudy but having had high tea at the Hospital & enjoyed it.
