12 June 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 12th [June 1910]. Morning church & then to see Angela. She poured out to me her troubles, how people in society here wring sums of money out of her, that they might amuse themselves, how business people in Austria cheat her, how Arch Duke & Duchess levy charity taxes from her some of what stick to their own hands en route. Truly great riches do not bring great happiness! I am indignant with the women of society here! How can they thus demean themselves. At 4 I called at the Hotel d’Italie for the Lasteyries & took them to the Eden’s garden where we had tea. The lilies are still out & the Rambler & Perkins roses. After dinner I went to the service at the Sailor’s Institute.
