8 August 1910 — Axenstein
Monday. 8th [August 1910]. At 4 o’cl we all went down by the funicular rail to Brunnen where a motor boat had been ordered for us to take a little excursion on the Lake. On arriving there we found there had been some mistake in the order & the chauffeur wanted to make an excessive charge wh on the Baron’s resisting he became furious, fetched the police gesticulated & shouted. After awhile he calmed down & consented to take us at a proper rate & we went off to Wm Tell’s chapel where we landed to see the frescoes. We came back in an hour & our stout chauffeur had quite recovered his equanimity being also rather frightened when he found out that the Baron was German Minister at Berne & that if reported he would lose his business. Da Laura was very tired on her return but recovered after dinner & played écarté with me till 10 o’cl.
