11 September 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 11th [September 1910]. To church with Baker in morning. I took Regina over to the Hospital after luncheon & left her there to have her arm properly attended to as it was not healing as quickly as it ought & this year there seems to be danger of infection to all wounds. Da Laura’s maid had been very ill from the effects of a slight cut. The Edens servant Nardo had a poisoned hand from a scratch. The Wiels man had the same thing—a sort of epidemic. After lunch Giuseppe when he brought me my coffee said he thought he might find a kitchen maid at Bologna if he went there—& we had searched for one here in vain. It was then 10 min. to 2– I told him to start off as soon as he could. He found the train left at 2.50 so I told him to be off & he went. Mrs Curtis & her son Ralph came to see me & also Clara Montalba. I had offered the latter to lend her 3 Savile Row when she & Hilda are in London this month—but Nellie writes word that the house is in the hands of workmen & uninhabitable so I had to withdraw my offer wh was very vexing both to Clara & to me. Mrs Curtis begged me to go & dine with her as Ralph & his wife were dining out—wh I was very glad to do.
