19 September 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 19th [September 1910]. Mr Montalba came in the morning to do Hospital accounts. The Adys went with me to lunch with Lady Helen Vincent in her beautifully arranged apartment at Pal. Giustinian close by here. She was alone—pleasant talk—tho’ not very clever. Lady H. is well read & interests herself in books. She always looks lovely & her pretty manners. I typed a good deal today trying to get on with my memories of the past. After tea I took the Adys out in gondola to the hospital and Eden’s garden. A W. Franklin Gunther Secy of American Embassy at Paris brought me a letter of introduction from Mme Waddington so I invited him to dinner & Mrs George Cornwallis West (Lady R. Churchill formerly) also dined. She was very agreeable & was pleased to meet Mrs Ady. She talked about her son & his writings & was pleased when she praised his Life of his father. She is naturally very proud of him & he is a good writer even if he is a dishonest politician & a disagreeable mannered man. Mr Gunther is a very presentable youth—more so than U.S. diplomats in general.
