26 September 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 26th [September 1910]. Mrs Ady, Mr Arbuthnot & I went to lunch with Mr & Mrs Humphrey Johnston at their Palazzo Contarini at Madonna dell’Orto. Cicely Ady was not very well & could not accompany us. Met there Mr & Mrs Byard, Countess Pourtalis & Mr Scott an architect of great promise at Florence, The Palazzo has been very cleverly & judiciously restored by its present owners & has rooms of fine proportions—one big sala runs from one end to the other of the house & has a balcony with steps to the garden. The furniture is old Venetian & there are many portraits of the Contarini family—not fine paintings but interesting—amongst them one of Catarina Cornaro in a frame with a crown on it. We took a walk in the garden which is large & has not been altered since it was laid out by the Contarini. There is openings in the walls on the edge of the Lagunes looking towards terra firma. The famous Casa dei Spiriti on one side of the garden also belongs to the Johnstons & is used by them as a studio. We did not visit it today. On leaving them we went into the church of Madonna dell’Orto & then home. Later I took a walk with Mr Arbuthnot as far as the Via Garibaldi & back while Mrs Ady went off to tea with Mrs Spender at Pal. Pisani near by.
