27 September 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 27th [September 1910]. We all went over to the Hospital in afternoon. That I might see how the work of putting in the heating apparatus was progressing. The head workman failed to meet me—as is the unbusinesslike way of Venetians. Went to walk in the Eden’s garden & enjoyed the view of the lagunes– Usual reception in the evening– A good many English travellers came amongst them Mr Bryan Hook (artist & his wife & daughter), Mr Woods R.A., Miss Grigsby, Mlle Dussau, the Byards, Miss Duncan Smith, Col & Mrs Gough, also Count Visconte of Milan & his friend Sr Zumoli who are here for the Risorgimento Congress & are great patriots. The old Count is a tipo tall, thin, expressive, excitable & voluble with grand manners & full of exaggerated compliments—but genial & delightful. They all left early & we went to bed at 11.
