26 October 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 26th [October 1910]. Got up early & ran off before 8 to the Archives to be with Concetta during the funeral. Already people were assembled round the coffin & she was kneeling there making her last adieus. I knelt down by her & put my arm round her & persuaded her to come away & allow the coffin to be carried away. Every one went off to the church except Teresa the girl cousin, the good Dr Muller & I & we sat with Concetta during the time of the funeral. She was calm & dry eyed told us over & over again about how she had gone up to her husband’s room & found him dead on the floor & all the talk she had had with him the day before he did the deed to persuade him his honor had not been tainted. When her friend Sra Cacciaguerra returned & I could leave her abt 10.30 in good hands I went off home. Guido had gone off with his father’s remains for burial at Bologna & will return tomorrow with Concetta’s mother. I packed, had lunch & left by the 2 o’cl train for Bologna to stay with dear Donna Laura Minghetti whom I had promised to accompany to Florence & thence on a visit to Marchese Folco Farinola at Varramista. I got to Mezzaratta abt 6 having been met at the station by the Fraticello (Faccioli). A Dr Zanetti (lawyer) was with Da Laura & he remained to dinner with us. Played patience (2 handed) with the Fraticello & went very early to bed.
