17 December 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 17th [December 1910]. Woke to find another dense fog! Will this weather never end? The sun came out later for a short time but the eternal fog returned in the evening. I did not go out. At 4 there was the choir practice here. I having let it take place in my rooms as Lady Radnor is away & she generally has it in her apartment. The Hillmans dined with me & we went together to see “Rigoletto” given at the Fenice. It was very badly done—& Mrs Hillman regretted she had not been engaged to sing the prima donna part. There had been a plan for her doing so but it came to nothing. However the baritone who had been advertised did not appear & his substitute had no voice—the whole thing went very badly, so it was a good thing for Mrs H. she was out of it.
