24 December 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 24th [December 1910]. Christmas Eve. Still such a dense white fog that one could not see any thing & Miss Chaffey & Miss Christie who were coming over from the hospital to dine with me could not get anyone to attempt to row across the Giudecca. In the town one could get along by hugging the side of the canal. Mr Latimer & Giaconda Hulton came to have their last rehearsal of the play they acted tonight “A pair of lunatics”. In the afternoon Mr Woods R.A. came to see to the preparations for the tableaux. We dined at 7.30—& were Mr Curtis, Miss Anna Broadwood & Mr Ralph Latimer, Mr & Mrs Hulton & their girls Giaconda & Theresa, Mr & Mrs Hillman, Honble Algernon Bourke, Mr & Mrs Price, Mr Bond, Mr Woods R.A., Mr Gervase Ker, Mr Augustus Montalba, Miss Rowe, 18 of us in all. All went off merrily—the dinner was a very bad one, the French woman I have being a very bad one—but I had bought plum puddings at the Florence stores & the Eden’s cook gave me mince meat & I hope no one noticed the inferiority of the food. In the evening I had an “at home” to wh 10 of the officers & cadets of the German training ship came & about 40 others, English & American—many were prevented by the fog. The play went off very well & was much applauded. Afterwards Mr Woods showed some excellent tableaux vivants—posing people on the spur of the moment, himself & Mr Bond, the Hulton girls & Mrs Price ending up with myself in my usual evening dress. Then tea in the dining room & Punch served round & by 12 o’cl all had left the house pleased with their little fête & I glad to get to bed.
