26 December 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 26th December [1910]. I went out in gondola after lunch & at 4.30 to the reception given by the German Consul’s wife to the German officers—there was a Christmas Tree & the company gathered round it & sang “O Tannenbaum” after wh grand tea was served & I came away leaving all very happy. I went to the Fenice Theatre to Countess Papadopoli’s box to see “La Bohème” very indifferently given. A very full house theatrone but not the Fenice of old days—the prices are lowered & the whole thing is done on a different scale—but it is not a success—either financially or otherwise—the orchestra not good nor the singing either formerly the night of St Stefano was the great night & the different owners of boxes appeared in full dress. Tonight many wore hats. The D. of Abruzzi paid a visit in our box & was very chatty.
