17 October 1911 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 17th [October 1911]. I received a letter from Lord Kitchener from Cairo. He invites me to stay with him if I go to Egypt this winter. He sends a cheque to pay Mr Arbib for a copy of a picture he has had made &c. Arbib came in this morning so I handed him the cheque. Hugh W’s mother came to see me & invited us all to tea at their garden on the Giudecca. Giuseppe came to me in tribulation to say our footman Luigi has been called to go to the army at once so I sent off Giuseppe to Bologna to try & find another man to replace him. He went by the 2 o’cl train & is to return tomorrow. Sir Edwin & I went in gondola to the Whitaker garden on the Giudecca. It was blowing a little & Sir Edwin felt the cold so we stayed but a short time there & got the gondola to land us on the Zattere from from there walked home. In the evening a few people came amongst them a Mlle de Montmart whose parents had lived at the Cape where they had known my mother & who are mentioned in my mothers published journals.
