25 October 1911 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 25th [October 1911]. We all breakfasted downstairs at 9 excepting Donna Laura who comes into my studio about 11 & sits with me & Olga Egerton there at work till 1 o’cl luncheon. After lunch I take her up to her room for an hour to rest & then we go out. I took her in open gondola to a new antichità shop in the Abbazia of San Gregorio. It has lately been restored and let to the great musical man Bergheim where we found all kinds of old furniture put out in a pretentious style wh took away all desire one might have to buy old things. Amongst them all was D. Annunzio’s bad imitation of St Ursula’s bed in the picture by Carpaccio! An absurd affectation of a very bad man! From there we went on to the Piazza where Donna Laura bought some small presents to take to her Roman friends– She wanted to buy some Venetian glass so remembering Sr Arbib’s advice I took her to Griffin’s shop to his delight. He then told me he had a mission to bring me 30 fr as a contribution from the Societé Francaise de bienfaisance for the hospital—so he agreed to bring it to me tomorrow.
