26 October 1911 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 26th [October 1911]. Griffin came in the morning with the money—so peace was sealed. At 11 I went out in gondola to San Barnaba to meet Sr Arbib & to see the house now abuilding for a Baroness Stern. The façade is good & the architect is Sr Berti who was there to show it me—but the interior wh is being decorated by Sr Mainellas the painter’s direction is abominable—such a collection of stone carvings ancient & modern—such a hideous staircase, such mosaic ornaments—all huddled up together! I never did see such bad taste! Poor lady she is being sadly exploitée. From there I took Sr Arbib over to the hospital to look at some property near it wh I should have liked to have bought to round the property. Lady Egerton kindly took Da Laura out this afternoon & I took a good rest & had an hour’s sound sleep in my bed. Mrs Curtis & Mr Latimer came to dinner.
