30 November 1911 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 30th [November 1911]. I went directly after lunch to a meeting at the Municipio of the Red Cross which was the most amusing thing in the world. The ladies had chairs all of a row in the Sala des Matromonio & there sat chatting & laughing. The President with his secy & another sat at a big table opposite to them—& began to explain the object of the meeting which in the confusion of voices I understood was to beg us to help to get up a sale & also a concert for the benefit of the Sick & wounded in the war at Tripoli. The ladies answered him & interrupted him & chattered with each other for a time when the door opened & a servant bearing a big tray with cups entered & coffee was handed round to every one—there was more talk & everyone seemed satisfied & little books were handed to each lady for collecting money how & when I never understood & we all dispersed.
