12 January 1912 — Luxor
Friday. 12th [January 1912]. After lunch went for a walk along the Nile Embankment where we found the scene unchanged—arabs dawdling about, & pressing one to go into the shops to buy post cards & other rubbish. We went into the Winter Palace Hotel to enquire whether Countess Contadone was there—but she has not arrived– But we met Mr Whymper who lives there in the winter months & who paints birds remarkably well & has published and illustrated a book on the Birds of Egypt. He was delighted to see us as he has no friends there this winter & we took him back with us & gave him tea in the garden of this hotel– After dinner we sat in the public drawing room where there burned a fire—which is pleasant as the evenings are chilly.
