11 February 1912 — Cairo
Sunday. 11th [February 1912]. I drove to church with Lord Kitchener & Capt. Fitz in the morning. We went preceeded by the sayce & Eda went to her aurist early & joined us in church. Singing was good—sermon uninteresting. There was a large luncheon party today—The Duke of Westminster & his polo team. The ladies were Mrs Cheatham & her sister a Mrs Samuelson, & a Mrs Nichol. Mrs Samuelson who is travelling without her husband told me she was very shy on her arrival but found Lord K. so kind & agreeable that she had enjoyed herself. There were 2 round tables at lunch, Lord K. at one & Capt. Fitz at the other at wh I also sat & Earl Rocksavage. Miss Mouravieff sat with us & a lot more men—the other ladies & men at Lord K’s table. When they were gone Lord K. came & said he was going to the Zoos with Capt. Fitz much against his will—but Fitz insisted. I said he was quite right as he ought to take exercise. He sent Eda & me in a carriage to call on Princess Nazli who was alone & much calmer than last time we were there. We returned to the Agency just in time for 5 o’clock tea—& found Sir William Garstin had arrived to stay. There was a lovely sunset. Eda went to church at 6 & I went & sat in the loggia & was there joined by Sir F. Milner & his son who returned from Mena House to stay here as the Princess Royal wishes to see Sir F. Lord K. & Sir William walked up & down in the walk over the Nile talking until it was quite dark. In the evening they sat talking together while I had Sir Fred next me on the sofa & had a good deal of trouble in keeping up a conversation with him so deaf he is. But he is such a nice man that it is quite worth the trouble. Lord K. says I must come back next winter & open the ball he will give in the new ball room he is going to build here & dance in the lancers d’honneur. I wonder whether I shall ever be here again!
