18 April 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 18th [April 1912]. Nela & I had a morning’s gardening in the belvedere rooted out bulbs from the window boxes & planted geraniums. The Whitakers came in while we were at work, also Lady Donoughmore bringing a Mr Nevile to see the pictures– Lady May Glyn the Bishop of Peterboro, their son & daughter came to lunch being in Venice for a few days– After lunch Da Laura Minghetti’s friends Sig. & Sigra Besso came to call. He a most pleasant jovial man. She quieter but seemed clever. I was out with Violet in afternoon—& left her that I might go & see Angela Reinelt. Sat with her for an hour & then went to see the Edens & had tea with them. Meeting there Mme Wiel we walked together to call on Mme Malagola–& I left her there & went on to the Pension Colcina to see Mme Emily the proprietor. Found her laid up in bed & sat a while with her—then walked home– Violet went to Opera with Css Robilant. Nela & I went after 10 to Lady Radnor’s—found a small party—not very lively. Came home soon after 11. Sent off a letter to Lord Kitchener today. Awful & heartrending details of the Titanic disaster! Only a little over 700 people saved!
