20 April 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 20th [April 1912]. I had a very busy morning rearranging furniture & making the house nice for the arrival of all my visitors. In the afternoon I went out with Mr A. & Nela to the Eden’s garden. I left them there to go on to the Whitaker garden & on arriving at home I found on the door step waiting for me Count Belmondo Caccia whom I had not seen since before the Tripoli was begun. He has now a command at Naples & is only here for a few days’ holiday. He seems to think that the war with the Arabs will last many years—& complains that the Powers will not allow Italy to make proper war against Turkey. He had been to disembark Italian troops at Bengass with great success. He is not yet an admiral but may be one any day. His wife Iduna met him here & we gave them tea. She I have known since she was a child of 12—at Constantinople where her father was Swedish Minister. They have an apartment here but since some 3 years have not lived here. Marchesa Cappelli came also to join us—having come from Rome for next week’s fêtes. Nela & I went out for a run on foot before dressing for dinner at 8.
