21 April 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 21st [April 1912]. We all 4 went to morning service. After which I went to see Angela– Princesse Eduard di Ligna & her daughter came to see Violet Vivian & to make my acquaintance. I showed her the pictures. Nela & I went out in gondola for an hour & I came home at 4 as I expected several people to come to tea. Lady Helen Vincent came also Lord & Lady Brassey & Mr & Mrs Monk (Sir Wm Portal’s daughter). I sent Nela to bring old Lady Mayo who has no gondola of her own. The Duchess of Somerset & her niece Miss Beryl Dundas & her nephew Mr Orme Sargent arrived by the luxe from London at the same time. The Dss was very full of the dreadful catastrophe of the Titanic. She says, the coal strike, the Irish Home Rule bill & all has been forgotten & every one thinks & speaks of the Titanic– Violet went to meet her uncle Mr Vivian who arrived by the luxe & she remained out to dinner with him. The Duchess went to bed at 6 being tired.
