22 May 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. [22nd May 1912]. Today we all 3 went to lunch with Angela Reinelt at Hotel Victoria to mee Css Gabrielle Brandolin & Conte Jiacini of Milan. He was very talkative & rather tiresome but there was much talk & banter. Gabrielle’s husband is having a great row now with all Venetian society—which gives rise to great gossip. In the course of conversation it was said that most of the towns of Italy are provincial “but not Venice” Gabrielle said. I felt inclined to say that it is the most provincial of all as there is little trade or commerce & many idlers. It was a very stormy kind of day & there was some rain so I remained at home all the rest of the day but Nela & I went out after dinner to Lady Radnor’s at home where we were thoroughly bored.
