24 May 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 24th [May 1912]. Matt Ridley went out for the day with friends to Torcello. Nora Hallé appeared upon the scene in the morn having just returned to Venice with her brother & left me abt 12.30. Nela also went out to lunch so I had a very quiet lunch by myself—& blessed rest– She returned at 3 & we went out together in gondola to look for rooms for Css Contadine who is coming here in a few days. Her husband has just died at Tripoli where he had joined the Red Cross– He was a very bad man & husband & she could not live with him—but now he is dead she is inconsolable & only remembers his good side. It is perhaps as well. We went to bid Bss Reinelt adieu & thence to the Hospital & had tea in the garden with Nora Hallé & Vera Wolkoff—but it soon began to rain so after running in to say good bye to the Edens in their garden we came home. Lord & Lady Goschen & Mr & Mrs Maurice Glyn dined with me.
