8 June 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 8th [June 1912]. Worked at figure in morning– I went in the afternoon to tea at the Europa with Contessa Villamarina to meet a Mrs Hawkins a rich Cornish lady who has rebuilt at her expense the tower of the Truro Cathedral in memory of her husband. Now the remarkable thing is that her husband though immensely rich was an unmoral man & a bad husband– He had lived away from his wife for the last sixteen years! She is a middle aged woman well spoken rather over dressed & not grande dame– After we had had tea & sat & talked when she left, I offered to take Css Contadone out for a row in gondola & we went a giro round by the Arsenal & St. Giov. e Paolo & so home.
