7 August 1912 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 7th [August 1912]. I was ready dressed at 11 waiting for Lord Kitchener to call for me. The time went by & then he telephoned to say that the motor had not turned up but he hoped to call soon. When it was getting on for 12 he called me again on the telephone & said that the chauffeur had forgotten the order & that it was now too late for me to go as I had to come back in the afternoon. It was very disappointing but there was no help for it so I agreed & said that I would go down tomorrow by train. He said he was engaged tomorrow so I said I wd come Friday which suits him– I will defer my departure for Ireland till Saty. I went to lunch with Lady Humphrey & where Lord Hugh Cecil also was. He told us he does not expect the Asquith Govt to last over the autumn. He was going down to the last sitting of the House as it breaks up today for the holidays. After lunch I walked on to Onie’s where I found Blanche & I told her not to expect me in Ireland till Saturday. Walked home– Hugh Poynter had come in this morning being here on his holiday from Constantinople & I promised to go to tea with Sir Edward Poynter at 5 at 70 Addison Road. I therefore went down in a taxi & found him & Mr & Mrs Hugh. They have a charming garden well planted so as to hide out all other houses & one might imagine oneself far out in the country. Sir Edward picked for me roses & gave me a plant of myrtle to carry away to Venice. He took me into his studio & I saw some lovely pictures he has painted of the Villa d’Este gardens in water colour. Home abt 6. Dined and early to bed.
