6 September 1912 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Friday. 6th [September 1912]. I bid Theo & Ines good bye a little after 11 & drove to Henstridge Station to go to Wimborne– Aura had gone off early hunting at 5 a.m. & I did not see her again. I had some time to wait at the station for the train was late & I arrived at Wimborne 20 mins late & consequently on reaching Canford where I was conveyed in the motor I found Cornelia & her family at lunch. At the door I found also a telegram from Lord Kitchener saying he cannot lunch with me tomorrow in town. The party at Canford consisted of Corise & Rosie Ridley very much gone off in looks, Corise’s son George, a Mr Craigie son of the writer, & a Col. Park. After lunch I sat awhile with Cornelia trying not to see the changes she has made—the hall emptied of furniture, the walls of the drawing room stripped of the fine old Venetian cut velvet Ivor had hung there, the fine Rembrandt in the dining room sold to an American. I felt ready to choke—& the changes are all made while poor Ivor is yet alive but lies upstairs unconscious & uncaring for it all. I did not ask to see him as they told me he knows no one. Corise & I went for a walk in the garden & into the churchyard where I saw my brother Monty’s grave & my husband’s & felt how we are all passing away. We went up to the village to call on Mrs Meaby who had began life as a stall room maid—then was housekeeper at Canford & now is wife of the estate agent. She was not at home so we went back to the house & looked at the Nineveh Porch—& at 4 Cornelia took me & Corise to the Cottage where the latter gave us tea & then accompanied me in the motor to Bournemouth station & I left for London arriving at Waterloo soon after 8. I found Charlie & Nellie Wyld at Savile Row also Nela Du Cane. We dined & went to bed early.
