4 October 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 4th [October 1912]. The weather suddenly turned bitterly cold again & a strong Bora blew—so that we had to walk as it was difficult to have out a gondola. Sir Luke & Lady Fildes & Mr Woods RA & Mr Pember & his step daughter Miss Kingsmill dined with me. I asked Sir Luke to tell me whether the child in his famous picture “The Doctor” had lived or not. He said “I have never made up my mind about that.” I said I hoped she had lived & he said again that he had not made up his mind about it.
