6 October 1912 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 6th [October 1912]. We went to morning service but it was so bitterly cold that I did not go out again. Duchess Canevaro came to afternoon tea & also Lady Evelyn Baring who with her husband has just returned from Constantinople via Athens & Corfu & is staying with Css Pourtalès at Pal. Capello Reo Marin. Lady E. was full of the inefficiency of our present Ambassador at Consple which is sad thing at this moment when the Near East is in such a disturbed state & war in the Balkans almost inevitable. I read the papers to Sir Arthur Fanshawe & we did puzzles in the evening.
